Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Camp Counsellor

We’re looking for energetic, adventure-savvy individuals ready to help us offer this incredible experience in the heart of Africa. You’ll be great at thinking on your feet, calm under pressure and ideally have experience in working with young people from ages 12-18. The camp’s projects span across four major areas designed educate our campers on the core concepts of conservation and sustainability for both communities and wildlife. You’ll hold a degree in Biology, Ecology, Anthropology, Sports, Primary Education or Hospitality with relevant experience, and show a natural interest in social impact programmes.
As a Volunteer Camp Counsellor, you’ll work each day with our students across various projects to guide, encourage and support them during the camp. You’ll be in-part responsible for their safety and enjoyment, making sure that any minor issues during the camp are dealt with appropriately and effectively.

The first programmes at Chyulu Wilderness Camp will open in early 2021. We want you to get the most out of your time at Chyulu Wilderness Camp so we require a minimum commitment of three weeks from each Volunteer Camp Counsellor. Each individual project runs for one week – Friday night to Saturday morning – and you’ll be expected at Basecamp for introductory briefings before the start of each camp.

As a Volunteer Camp Counsellor, we take care of all your food and accommodation during the duration of your work at Chyulu Wilderness Camp. We also handle the transfer flight to the camp from Nairobi International Airport.

Return flights from your home country are not included, but our Camp Coordinators can advise on suitable routes and airlines for you; you’ll need a comprehensive travel insurance, for the duration of your project; you’ll need a Single Entry Visa (see below); we’ll provide you with a basic kit list once you confirm your interest.

Yes. You can obtain a Single Entry Visa online for $51, link here, which enables you to stay in Kenya for up to 90 days. Should you stay longer than this, you will be able to renew your visa for a further 90 days at the immigration headquarters in Nairobi. We advise you to organise this in advance of your arrival in Kenya. Please check specific requirements for your nationality.

The camp is situated in an area that is safe and mostly free from tropical diseases. Malaria is low risk but still present. However, we do ask that basic vaccinations – DTP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio), MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Hepatitis B – are up to date. You will be asked to provide a medical record of these to confirm your participation.
